Remodeling Specialties

We are a small, locally owned and operated business, and because of that we are highly focused on pleasing every single customer. Our expert team is committed to working with you to give you the home of your dreams through expert remodeling and improvement services.

I enjoy old objects and antiques that are still practical and functional. For many years I have owned 1920 Craftsman homes. My passion is to modernize in the spirit of making homes look like they did when they were new. I am proud that my house looks old, but it is as functional as any new house. I started Remodeling Specialties to do just that. It doesn’t matter how old a house is because each has more or less an original style that carries the trends of when it was built. I use this concept as a guide.

Mostly, Americans don’t build houses the way we used to. Quality, skilled labor is hard to come by these days. Attention to detail and quality workmanship is extremely important to me. I don’t cut corners or slack on material quality. And the people that work for me have the same conviction. I would not want to build the way it was done in 1920 because the materials are different and of course the technology is so much better. What makes the difference is the attitude of delivering quality work. That is simply my way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get help with financing?
There are companies that can help you secure financing for remodeling. One is SuperMoney.com

What is the best way to define my project?
Start with a list of the main items you want to address. Such as; a new tub, countertops, new appliances, etc, If you are aware of the problems with the house such as plumbing issues, it will affect the cost. Also, look online at websites like Pinterest and Houzz for ideas. It’s helpful for us to know what your design aesthetic is.

Do I need a designer or an architect?
Not usually. I am not a designer but I have an art background and I can be quite helpful in that regard. Sometimes we need a scale drawing for a permit application. Unless your project is large or adds to the footprint of the house an architect is not necessary. If you are building a room addition, working with an architect is of great advantage.

How do I know if I can open up a wall?
Any wall can be eliminated. It can be relatively simple or very complex. This almost always requires a building permit which adds quite a bit of cost and production time to the job.

How do I know you are reputable?
We have over 100 reviews on Angie’s List. We also have client references from past work. You may discuss with them and in some cases, you may be able to go see some of my projects and talk with the owners about the experience.

How long will my project take?
It depends on the project, how involved and if there is a permit, etc. An approximate date is reasonable. A guarantee is not possible, however, because we never know what obstacles will be presented. The most common delays are the result of inspections, product availability and client changes.

Who buys the parts?
Our estimates always include building materials and labor. That means materials such as boards, glue, and nails are rolled in. It means crew labor and trade labor, like plumbers and electricians fees, are approximate. The tradesmen we use are all licensed in the State of Michigan. Initial estimates do not include items like cabinets, faucets, counters and all of the things that the homeowner needs to choose. Those are added later in the process.

Testimonials

"If you are a perfectionist and want a high quality kitchen remodel done this is the company you want. They were very patient with us and it turned out amazing. Our original budget was exceeded and we paid a lot for the work but the changes were understood in advance and well worth it. The crew was A+ and the owner/contractor did the design work which made the best use of our small space. All our expectations were exceeded." - Holly Q.

"Fred and his team did an excellent job replacing many floorboards in my home that were damaged by the previous owner's cats. In order to refinish the floors, they needed to do an enormous amount of prep - disassembling two walk-in closets, and removing stair railings and many doors. The dining room had a mahogany inlay that Fred's crew needed to match up. I can barely tell where the new boards meet the old. I also asked Fred to select new, upgraded baseboards for the dining area while I was out of town. He chose exactly what I would have and did an impeccable install. The clean-up on this job was a lot. The crew did their best - windows, door frames, washing tile over and over.... Be forewarned - floors are a messy business and I'm still dusting! Do this work before moving into a home so you never have to do it again! Fred's team is always pleasant, tidy, and professional. I enjoy working with them and especially appreciate the creative thinking of Fred. I've had several jobs done, large and small, by this crew, and have never been disappointed. While their price is higher than some, the work reflects that. In my experience, you get what you pay for and, especially in construction, you will end up paying for the cheaper work in the end." - Gary V.

"The work went very smoothly. They have a small team so the same people are there everyday to do the work. They only sub-out plumbing and electrical work. It was nice to be able to talk to the same people throughout the project. Also Fred was very good about design selection. He accompanied me to tile and cabinet distributors and worked clsely in the selection of hardware. RS was probably not the cheapest option but they did great work so were a great value." - Timmy I.

"Fred and Brett were awesome!! My bathroom is exactly what I have always wanted. The tile work in my shower is amazing, you can really see the attention to detail. Would definitely recommend them for any remodel job!!!" - Faram T.

"Fred and his crew did an excellent job with our project.  We had a wall removed between the kitchen eating area and the living room and then finished with a knee wall.  The work was meticulously accomplished; the woodwork cap on the knee wall and the finished and painted drywall are perfect and look as if it was original construction.  Electrical lines were rerouted, a cold air return was relocated and all was accomplished within Fred's estimated timeline.  The budget was exactly as promised.  We couldn't be happier." - Michael E.

"Fred and his team are awesome!  There was always progress being made on our kitchen remodel project and Fred did a great job keeping us informed along the way.  If an issue/challenge was encountered, Fred came to us with soulutions and options.  We even tacked on a couple additional items to our job - painting another room and fixing/reinforcing our garage.  Fred and Brett are personable, professional, and a pleasure to work with.  We highly recommend Fred Sons remodeling." - Maureen H.

"Fred was very approachable, friendly and patient. He took the time to get to know us and understand what we were looking for in the project. Most importantly he helped us to work within our budget. There were absolutely no "high pressure" or "bait and switch" tactics.

He is also very knowledgeable with building materials and codes. He secured the proper permits and ensured the work was done correctly to pass inspections the first time. As a bonus, he fixed a trim on the garage door which had been chew through by an animal - for free!" - Burdell C.
